What is an RDHAP?
What is RDHAP (Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice)** is a highly trained dental professional who operates both independently and within office settings, particularly in underserved or dental shortage areas. In these settings, RDHAPs provide comprehensive dental hygiene services.
They are equipped to deliver care in various environments, from private practice offices to mobile units, addressing the needs of populations that might not have regular access to dental care. By offering flexible and accessible dental hygiene services, RDHAPs play a crucial role in improving oral health outcomes and reducing disparities in dental care access.
Their presence in office settings within shortage areas ensures that essential dental care is available to all, particularly those who are most in need.
Why was the RDHAP created?
The California Legislature established the RDHAP role to deliver dental hygiene services to special populations who may not have
reasonable access to traditional dental care.
This license category was developed to ensure that individuals in alternative settings, such
as their residences, receive essential oral health care.

- Non-surgical periodontal therapies with topical local anesthetic (deep).
- Denture cleaning.

- Strategies for the prevention of cavities and gum disease.
